Soccer Club Members: No more than two players on an intramural team roster may be a member or coach of a University of Iowa soccer club. A team will automatically forfeit if more than one player is ejected from the same game. There will be no offsides. While incidental contact will occur, contact should be avoided at all costs. Continued rough or malicious play will not be tolerated.
Substitution Zones: At mid-field and three yards either side of mid-field, a substitution area will be marked. Substitutes shall enter and leave through this area. Back to Top Rule 5: The Ball The game ball used will be provided by Recreational Services unless another legal soccer ball is provided by a team. Any ball that is not property of Recreational Services must be approved by the game officials. Back to Top Rule 6: Team Composition A match shall be played by two teams, each consisting of not more than seven players on the field at one time, one of whom shall be the goalkeeper.
To start a match, the minimum number of players per team shall be four. Co-Rec player combinations permitted are: 7 players: 3 men and 3 women in the field and the goalkeeper may be either gender 6 players: 3 women and 3 men in the field of play including the goalkeeper 5 players: 2 men and 2 women in the field and the goalkeeper may be either gender 4 players: 2 men and 2 women in the field of play including the goalkeeper In all cases, there can never be a difference greater than one between the number of males and females per team on the field at the same time.
Teams that fall outside of these regulations due to injury and do not have a player to replace the injured player may continue the game outside of the legal team combinations.
If, in the event of injury or players being sent off, fewer than three players are left on either of the teams, the match shall be abandoned. There is no limit to the amount of players allowed on the roster.
Back to Top Rule 7: Substitutions Substitutions can only be made during a dead ball, whether for the goalkeeper or for any other player on the field. To substitute, a player must wait at the division line midfield line until the ball is dead out-of-bounds, penalty, etc. The entering player must wait for the exiting player to leave the field before entering. Substitutions may only take place for the team in control of the ball during throw-ins, corner kicks, and free kicks.
During these instances, once the team controlling the ball substitutes, the opposing team may then bring substitutes into the game during that dead ball period. Substitutions for either team may take place during goal kicks, an injury, yellow card, red card, and after a goal. The player leaving the field shall do so from the touch line crossing over at the sector called the substitution zone.
The player entering the field shall also do so from the substitution zone but not until the player leaving the field has passed completely over the touch line. A substitute shall be subject to the authority and jurisdiction of the referee whether called upon to play or not. Penalty: An illegal substitution occurs if, during a live ball, a substitute enters the field, or a replaced player leaves the field.
Play will stop immediately if the team in possession of the ball is the team that committed the illegal substitution. Once play has stopped, the referee will caution yellow card the offending substituting player. Play will resume with an indirect free kick for the non-offending team from the spot of the infringement. Back to Top Rule 8: Duration of the Game The duration of the game shall be two equal periods of 20 minutes. The duration of either half shall be extended to enable a penalty kick to be taken.
The half time interval shall not exceed five minutes. Mercy rule: If a team is ahead by eight goals or more at any point during the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half, the game shall end. The clock will run continuously throughout each half and golden goal overtime period. There will be no injury time added to the length of a half. The clock will be stopped in the case of an extended injury at the discretion of the referee.
Back to Top Rule 9: Player Equipment A player shall not wear anything in which the referee considers dangerous to other players. The usual equipment of a player shall consist of a shirt, shorts, socks, and footwear. The only footwear permitted shall be canvas or soft-leather training shoes, athletic shoes with rubber soles or some similar material, or rubber molded cleats. Metal cleats or studs are not allowed. The use of footwear is required.
Players on a team must wear the same color shirt during matches. Players without matching color shirts will wear black and gold pinnies provided by University of Iowa Intramural Sports. Hand jewelry is not permitted to be worn during participation in Indoor Soccer. Wrist jewelry must be taped down, and must stay taped down throughout the contest.
Necklaces must be taped down inside the shirt, and must stay taped down throughout the contest. Stud earrings, or earrings that do not extend beyond the earlobe, are permitted, but must be covered throughout the contest. Intramural Sports will not provide tape for the taping of jewelry. Ceiling: If the ball hits the ceiling or other object, the team that did not touch the ball last restarts play with a kick-in from the nearest point on the touchline.
If a player earns two yellow cards in a match, he is shown a red card. The offending player serves a minimum one-match suspension. Penalty Spot: 20 feet from the center of the goal Advantage: Advantage will be applied in futsal. May kick the ball directly over the half-way line. May score directly with his or her feet during the run of play. May not punt or drop-kick the ball. May not possess the ball for more than 5 seconds in his or her own half. May throw the ball directly across the half-way line.
A ball thrown directly into the opposing goal results in a goal clearance for the opposing team. This means that the first team to score will win. If teams are still tied at the end of the 3-minute half then the game will be decided by penalty kicks.
Penalty kicks will consist of 3 kickers from each team then 1 for 1 until a winner is determined. Indoor soccer matches are played with 5 outfield players and a goalie.
Substitutions are permitted and players can be substituted and brought back into play as many times as they want, according to the rules for indoor soccer. Play is stopped when the ball touches the net above the wall or is kicked high and touches the ceiling.
Indoor rules require the referee to stop the game and award the ball to the opposite team. Ball contact must be made during a play on the ball; no charging with hands or elbows, no charging from behind, no holding the opponent etc. Indoor soccer rules ban the use of the sliding tackle, though such techniques are less useful on turf than they are on a slick field.
Substitutions are unlimited and any player can enter and exit the game as many times as they want. Substitutions happen while the game is in progress, provided that one player leaves the play before another one steps on, as explained in indoor soccer rules. Some Leagues require for the ball to be out of play in order to do substitutions. Yellow, red and blue cards are used by the referee to enforce the indoor soccer rules and keep the game under control.
Blue card is issued to players who need little disciplinary action due to a hard tackle or attitude towards other players or the referee. Blue Card ejects that player for 2 minutes, leaving the team with only 4 outfield players. Red Card has the player ejected from the game and in most cases outside of the building.
Some leagues enforce a special zone inside the goalkeeper's box called the crease. No player may shoot the ball from inside the crease unless that player entered the crease already having the ball. Soccer ball kicked from one end of the field may not cross three lines without touching the ground. These lines are evenly spaced along the length of the pitch, with one of them being the exact center.
The rule is used to avoid playing long balls and to keep the ball on the ground. Violations are punished with a free kick at the first line closer to the goal.
