The job title doesn't tell the whole story, however: These people are doing mathematics and are indeed mathematicians. Furthermore, the number of mathematicians is increasing. The number of new Ph. I hung it because I really and truly believe that these are some of the most helpful things one can do when trying to solve a problem. If you are trying to solve a complex problem, and have no idea where to start, try to find a pattern and see if that pattern tells you anything. Math and life is full of patterns, and often seeing a pattern will either help give you direction in finding a solution, or at least help you to better understand the problem and come up with an idea to solve it.
